Historical context

He acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession, and his reign over the Roman Empire was characterised by internal peace without major revolts or military incursions, alongside careful administration of the imperial treasury.

This silver denarius was struck at Rome. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin following its introduction during the Second Punic War. The coin features the obverse inscription "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XI" alongside a laureate portrait of the emperor. The reverse, inscribed "COS IIII", depicts Antoninus Pius veiled and draped, standing left while holding a roll and sacrificing over a lighted tripod-altar with a patera.
