Historical context

He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His reign was notable for the peaceful state of the Roman Empire, free of major revolts or military incursions, and Antoninus proved an effective administrator who left a large surplus in the treasury.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is a denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse bears the emperor's laureate portrait alongside the inscription "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XII". The reverse legend reads "COS IIII" and accompanies a depiction of Annona holding corn-ears above a modius, alongside an anchor set on the ground.
