Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, reigning as the fourth ruler of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty following his adoption by Hadrian. His administration was noted for maintaining a peaceful state across the Roman Empire, avoiding major revolts or foreign incursions, and leaving a substantial surplus in the treasury upon his death in 161.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire. The obverse carries the imperial titles with the legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXI", while the reverse bears the legend "VOTA SVSCEPTA DEC III COS IIII" and depicts Antoninus Pius standing left, sacrificing from a patera over a tripod.
