Historical context

Antoninus Pius governed the Roman Empire as emperor from AD 138 until his death in 161. He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, having been adopted by Hadrian as his successor. His administration saw a largely peaceful state throughout the empire, marked by effective financial management that left a substantial treasury surplus, as well as legal reforms and public infrastructure works.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver coin represents the denarius, which functioned as the standard Roman silver denomination following its introduction during the Second Punic War. The coin bears imperial titles on the obverse citing his tribunician power and position as pater patriae with the legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXII". The reverse pairs the fourth consulship noted in "FORTVNA OBSEQVENS COS IIII" with Fortuna, depicted draped with a patera, a rudder set upon a prow, and a cornucopiae.
