Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having married Faustina before his adoption by Hadrian. Under his administrative rule, the Roman Empire remained in a largely peaceful state without major revolts or military incursions, leaving a substantial surplus in the imperial treasury at his death.

Struck at the Rome mint under Antoninus Pius, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. The issue honours his wife Faustina the Elder, identified on the obverse as "FAVSTINA AVGVSTA". The reverse pairs a draped, ornamented throne, transverse sceptre, and peacock with the dedication "IVNONI REGINAE".
