Historical context

Antoninus Pius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161 as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors within the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Before succeeding Hadrian, Antoninus had married Hadrian's niece Faustina. His administration at Rome was marked by general internal peace across the empire, efficient governance, and the accumulation of a substantial treasury surplus.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard silver currency of the Roman Empire. The issue honours the emperor's wife, Faustina the Elder, identified with the obverse inscription DIVA FAVSTINA. The reverse depicts an ornamented hexastyle temple housing an enthroned statue of Faustina, decorated with roof sculptures and a quadriga, accompanied by the inscription AED DIV FAVSTINAE.
