Historical context

Antoninus Pius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161 as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Born into a senatorial family, he had married Faustina, the niece of Emperor Hadrian, prior to being adopted as Hadrian's successor. His reign from Rome was marked by an effective administration, relative peace, and substantial treasury reserves.

This silver coin belongs to the standard Roman silver denomination, the denarius, produced at the mint of Rome. The obverse commemorates the emperor's deceased wife, Faustina the Elder, identified by the inscription "DIVA FAVSTINA". Paired with this memorial portrait, the reverse carries the legend "AETERNITAS" and depicts a veiled female figure holding a sceptre, likely representing Juno.
