Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Before his accession, he married Hadrian's niece Faustina. Adopted by Hadrian as his son and successor shortly before Hadrian's death, Antoninus ruled over an empire characterised by internal peace, effective administration, and an absence of major revolts or foreign military incursions.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Antoninus Pius. Issued to honour his wife, the coin features the obverse legend "DIVA FAVSTINA" alongside a draped bust of Faustina the Elder, while the reverse depicts the goddess Ceres with the inscription "CERES".
