Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having married Faustina before his accession. Adopted as son and successor by Emperor Hadrian, he became the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His reign over the Roman Empire was characterised by internal peace, sound administration, and financial stability, with the imperial mint situated in Rome.

Struck in silver at Rome, this coin belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The issue honours Faustina the Elder following her deification, carrying the obverse legend "DIVA FAVSTINA" alongside her draped bust. The reverse presents a peacock walking right with its head turned back left, accompanied by the inscription "CONSECRATIO".
