Historical context
Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors. Adopted by Emperor Hadrian shortly before Hadrian's death, Antoninus administered an empire notable for its peaceful condition, marked by the absence of major revolts or military incursions and culminating in a substantial surplus in the imperial treasury.
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that circulated from the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The piece names Antoninus on the obverse as "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III". The reverse depicts his adopted son Marcus Aurelius, designated with the legend "AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS", whom Antoninus adopted alongside Lucius Verus before both succeeded him as co-emperors in AD 161.
