Historical context

Antoninus Pius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161 as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Having been adopted by Emperor Hadrian, Antoninus later adopted Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus to succeed him. His reign was characterised by administrative stability, treasury surpluses, and a largely peaceful state across the empire.

Struck at the Rome mint, this coin is a silver denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse features Antoninus's adopted son and eventual successor, Marcus Aurelius, identified by the inscription "AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS". The reverse pairs the legend "PIETAS AVG" with priestly emblems, consisting of a knife, sprinkler, jug, lituus, and simpulum.
