Historical context

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius carries the obverse legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III". During the Roman Empire, the sestertius circulated as a large brass denomination valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses, useful in everyday commerce. The reverse scene and inscription, reading "REX ARMENIIS DATVS S C", record an imperial investiture, showing the emperor standing to place a tiara upon the head of the king of Armenia.
