Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, serving as the fourth ruler of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Formerly a member of a senatorial family, he had been adopted as son and successor by Emperor Hadrian. Antoninus acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession to the throne, and his reign over the Roman Empire was characterised by effective administration and general peace.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze coin is a sestertius, a denomination valued in commerce at one quarter of a denarius. The obverse presents the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III". The reverse depicts a decastyle temple adorned with statues on the roof and within the pediment, featuring a seated figure in the centre alongside the legend "ROMAE AETERNAE S C".
