Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, ruling as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Adopted as son and successor by Emperor Hadrian, he acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession. His administration was noted for maintaining a peaceful empire free from major revolts or incursions, alongside a military campaign in southern Scotland that led to the Antonine Wall.

This bronze as was struck at the mint of Rome under Antoninus Pius's authority. The obverse presents the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the legend ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III. The reverse features the legend IMPERATOR II S C and depicts a sow standing beneath a holm-oak, suckling four young with one or two additional young standing in front.
