Historical context

Antoninus Pius served as Roman emperor between AD 138 and 161, having been adopted by Hadrian as his son and successor shortly before Hadrian's death. He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession. An effective administrator who left a substantial treasury surplus, his reign was marked by general peace across the Roman Empire.

This bronze sestertius was struck at the mint of Rome under Antoninus Pius, carrying the obverse legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P". During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a large brass denomination useful for commerce, historically valued at one quarter of a denarius. The reverse bears the inscription "LIBERALITAS AVG IIII COS IIII S C" and depicts the emperor seated on a platform beside an officer, accompanied by Liberalitas holding an account-board and cornucopiae before a citizen who holds out the fold of a toga.
