Historical context

Antoninus Pius served as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted as son and successor by Hadrian shortly before Hadrian's death. He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Acclaimed with the cognomen Pius following his accession, his administration oversaw a peaceful era notable for the absence of major revolts or foreign incursions.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait of the emperor with the legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS IIII". The reverse design depicts a helmeted and draped Roma seated upon a throne, accompanied by the letters "S C". She holds Victory on an extended right hand, with a transverse spear resting in the crook of her left arm and her left elbow supported by a shield positioned on a prow.
