Historical context
Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted by Hadrian as his successor shortly before Hadrian's death. The fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he was known as an effective administrator who left a substantial treasury surplus. His reign was characterized by widespread peace across the empire, devoid of major revolts or military incursions.
This bronze sestertius was struck at the Rome mint under Antoninus Pius, whose imperial titles appear in the obverse legend “ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XI”. The reverse design features Annona holding grain stalks over a modius alongside an anchor, accompanied by the legend “ANNONA AVG COS IIII”.
