Historical context
Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, initially alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently as sole emperor from 180. His reign brought an end to the Pax Romana and was marked by internal intrigues and an increasingly dictatorial leadership. Commodus delegated the administration of state affairs to palace chamberlains and praetorian prefects, until his assassination in 192 concluded the Nerva–Antonine dynasty.
Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse features a laureate head of the emperor with the legend "COMM ANT AVG P BRIT". The reverse depicts the figure of Felicitas, draped and holding a caduceus alongside a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P FEL".
