Historical context

His reign brought an end to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and is commonly regarded as marking the conclusion of the Pax Romana. Characterised by internal intrigues, his administration relied heavily on praetorian prefects and chamberlains while his governance shifted towards an increasingly dictatorial style.

The obverse presents a laureate head of the emperor, accompanied by the inscription "M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT". The reverse depicts the figure of Nobilitas draped and standing right, bearing a sceptre and a statuette of Minerva, framed by the imperial titles and offices recorded in the legend "NOBILIT AVG P M TR P XII IMP VIII COS V P P".
