Historical context

His sole rule, which saw less military conflict than his father's reign alongside pervasive internal intrigues and conspiracies, is traditionally considered the close of the Pax Romana. Commodus delegated the administration of state matters to his palace chamberlains and praetorian prefects until his assassination in 192.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver piece belongs to the standard Roman silver denomination, the denarius, which served as the primary silver currency from around 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse features the laureate portrait of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT". The reverse depicts Aequitas draped and standing left, carrying scales and a cornucopiae, with the imperial titulature recorded as "P M TR P XIII IMP VIII COS V P P".
