Historical context

Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, serving initially as co-emperor alongside his father, Marcus Aurelius, before ruling alone from 180. His sole reign, often considered the end of the Pax Romana, experienced few foreign wars but was marked by internal conspiracies and an increasingly dictatorial leadership. His assassination in 192 brought an end to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty.

Struck at the Rome mint, this coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse features Commodus wearing a laurel wreath, accompanied by the inscription "M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT P P". The reverse design depicts Libertas draped and standing, holding a pileus and a rod, framed by the legend "LIB AVG P M TR P XV COS VI".
