Historical context

Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, initially serving alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently governing as sole emperor from 180 until his assassination in 192. His sole rule saw internal political intrigues and an increasingly dictatorial leadership style, marking the conclusion of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and the Pax Romana.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver currency that circulated widely from the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The obverse depicts Commodus laureate, accompanied by the inscription "M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT P P", whilst the reverse features the emperor seated in a toga, holding a branch and sceptre, with the legend "P M TR P XV IMP VIII COS VI".
