Historical context

Marcus Aurelius reigned as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, having been adopted by Antoninus Pius in 138 alongside Lucius Aurelius Verus. Following the death of Antoninus Pius in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the imperial throne and elevated his adoptive brother Verus to serve as co-emperor. Their joint succession represented the first time the Roman Empire was ruled simultaneously by more than one emperor. This gold aureus, the primary gold denomination of the imperial coinage, was produced in Rome in 161.
