Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, a period defined by extensive warfare, including the Marcomannic Wars against Germanic peoples such as the Marcomanni and Quadi. Struck at the mint of Rome, this coin is a dupondius, an imperial brass denomination worth two asses or half a sestertius. Beginning in the reign of Nero in 66 AD, the dupondius was typically distinguished from the similarly sized as by the addition of a radiate crown to the portrait of the emperor.
