Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, initially acceding alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Verus following the death of Antoninus Pius in 161. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Marcus had been adopted by Antoninus in 138 upon the instruction of Hadrian, subsequently marrying Antoninus's daughter Faustina in 145.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Marcus Aurelius, this bronze sestertius commemorates the deceased and deified emperor Antoninus Pius. In Roman imperial currency, the sestertius served as a coin valued at one quarter of a denarius, or two and a half asses, which made it useful for commerce. The obverse acknowledges the emperor's divinisation through the legend "DIVVS ANTONINVS", while the reverse depicts a Corinthian column set on a base and surmounted by a statue of Divus Antoninus, accompanied by the dedication "DIVO PIO S C".
