Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and married Annia Galeria Faustina the Younger in 145. Faustina served as empress from 161 until her death in 175/176 AD, being honoured by her husband and soldiers as Augusta and Mater Castrorum. The as was a bronze, and later copper, coin used across the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, struck here at Rome under Marcus Aurelius's imperial authority.
