Historical context

Faustina the Younger, daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder, was Roman empress from 161 until her death as the wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. She held significant esteem among Roman soldiers and her husband, receiving the title Augusta and the designation Mater Castrorum. Issued at the Rome mint under the authority of Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 161 to 180, this copper as commemorates the empress during a period of relative peace and dynastic prominence.
