Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180 as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. The last ruler of the Pax Romana, his reign included military campaigns such as the Marcomannic Wars and the Parthian War, alongside the outbreak of the Antonine Plague. He also oversaw the imperial coinage, reducing the silver purity of the denarius.

Produced at the mint of Rome under Marcus Aurelius, this bronze sestertius features Lucilla, designated by the obverse legend LVCILLAE AVGVSTAE. The reverse honours the goddess Ceres, who is portrayed seated upon a cista mystica bearing corn-ears and a torch, accompanied by the inscription CERES S C.
