Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180 as part of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, initially sharing power with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus. Lucilla, born Annia Aurelia Galeria Lucilla to Marcus Aurelius and Faustina the Younger, married Lucius Verus and was later an elder sister to Commodus. Issued under the authority of Marcus Aurelius at Rome, this coin is a sestertius, which in the imperial period was a large brass denomination worth two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius.
