Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty as the last ruler of the Pax Romana. He had served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. Throughout his reign, the empire engaged in significant warfare, including the Marcomannic Wars against Germanic peoples, and Marcus Aurelius reduced the silver purity of the imperial coinage.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver piece is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced around 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin carries Marcus Aurelius's imperial titulature on the obverse alongside the legend "M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXV". The reverse legend "COS III" records his third consulship, accompanying a depiction of Roma helmeted and draped, seated upon a cuirass with her foot on a helmet while holding a vertical spear and a figure of Victory.
