Historical context

Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus served briefly as Roman emperor for two months in 253, having been acclaimed by his Moesian troops following a victory against invading Goths. He took power in Italy after defeating Emperor Trebonianus Gallus in August 253, but was killed by his own soldiers a month later when Valerian advanced with a larger force. Struck at Rome in AD 253, this antoninianus represents the double-denomination coin introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD, characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor.
