Historical context

Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus, commander of the Moesian troops, was acclaimed Roman emperor by his army in 253 following a victory against invading Goths. He marched into Roman Italy and defeated Emperor Trebonianus Gallus at the Battle of Interamna Nahars in August 253, but reigned for only two months before being killed by his own men in September 253 when Valerian advanced against him. During this era, soldier emperors struck the antoninianus—a double denomination introduced under Caracalla in AD 215 featuring a radiate crown—with progressively debased silver content to maintain troop loyalty.
