Historical context

This silver antoninianus was issued under Aemilian's authority from an uncertain mint. The denomination was originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a coin valued at two denarii. Antoniniani depicting women conventionally showed the bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen here with Cornelia Supera and the obverse legend "COR SVPERA AVG". The reverse design depicts a seated Juno holding a flower and a swaddled child, accompanied by the inscription "IVNONI AVG". During this era of soldier emperors, coin issues were continually struck to pay military forces and retain their allegiance amid ongoing silver shortages.
