Historical context
Aemilian, also known as Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus, was Roman emperor for two months in 253. Formerly the commander of the Moesian troops, he was acclaimed emperor by his army following a victory against invading Goths. He advanced to Italy, defeating Emperor Trebonianus Gallus at the Battle of Interamna Nahars in August 253, but was killed by his own men a month later when Valerian marched against him.
This bronze sestertius was minted at Rome under Aemilian's authority. In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius represented a value of two and a half asses, equivalent to one quarter of a denarius, which made the denomination useful for commerce. Struck during his brief rule, the coin bears his imperial titles alongside the reverse inscription "VOTIS DECENNALIBVS S C" enclosed within a laurel wreath.
