Historical context
Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus served as Roman emperor alongside Pupienus for three months in AD 238, during the turbulent Year of the Six Emperors. Introduced around 211 BC during the Second Punic War, the silver denarius was long the standard Roman silver coin before being gradually replaced by the antoninianus during the reign of Gordian III. Struck at the mint of Rome in AD 238, this issue presents Balbinus alongside the personification of Concordia, marking the brief joint imperial reign.
