Historical context

Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus ruled as Roman emperor alongside Pupienus for three months in 238, a turbulent period known as the Year of the Six Emperors. This antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and distinguished by the emperor wearing a radiate crown, was produced during Balbinus's brief joint reign before his death in July or August of 238.
