Historical context

During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a coin used in commerce, having originated as a denomination valued at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius. The reverse bears the legend "LIBERALITAS AVGVSTORVM S C" and depicts Balbinus, Pupienus, and Gordian III seated together on a platform. They are accompanied by a soldier holding a spear, the draped figure of Liberalitas holding an abacus and cornucopiae, and a citizen mounting the platform steps.
