Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under the authority of Balbinus within the Roman Empire, struck at the mint of Rome.

Struck as a sestertius, the denomination represented a coin denomination whose name derived from "two and one half", referencing its nominal value of two and a half asses. In Roman commerce, this denomination functioned as one quarter of a denarius, which was valued at ten asses. The reverse of the piece depicts Providentia standing draped while holding a wand above a globe on the ground alongside a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDENTIA DEORVM S C".
