Historical context

Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus served as Roman emperor alongside Pupienus for three months during 238, a period of political crisis known as the Year of the Six Emperors. Struck at the mint of Rome, this sestertius represents the large brass coinage issued under the authority of Balbinus during his brief joint reign.
