Historical context

This silver coin was produced for the Roman Empire under the authority of Balbinus at the mint of Rome. It forms part of imperial coinage issued during the broader Roman imperial period, which spanned from 27 BC to AD 476. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait alongside the official imperial titulature reading "IMP C D CAEL BALBINVS AVG".

Struck as a denarius, the coin belongs to the principal silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War in approximately 211 BC. The denarius served as the standard silver coin of the Roman currency system until the reign of Gordian III, when the antoninianus gradually replaced it. On the reverse, the coin features the legend "PROVIDENTIA DEORVM" accompanied by a depiction of Providentia holding a wand over a globe and a cornucopiae.
