Historical context

Decimus Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197, proclaimed emperor by legions in Britain and Hispania following the murder of Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. Albinus initially cooperated with Septimius Severus before the two entered into a civil war in 196, leading to his death in battle in 197.

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold coin represents an aureus, the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD. Valued originally at 25 silver denarii and 100 sestertii, aurei formed a central part of imperial coinage. The reverse pairs the inscription SAECVLO FRVGIFERO COS II with an image of Saeculum Frugiferum, depicted wearing a fez, seated upon a throne flanked by sphinxes, raising the right hand, and holding corn-ears.
