Historical context

Decimus Clodius Albinus was proclaimed emperor by legions in Britain and Hispania in 193 following the murder of Pertinax during the Year of the Five Emperors. Initially cooperating with fellow contender Septimius Severus, he ruled as an imperial pretender until civil war broke out between them in 196. This bronze as was struck during that period of joint rule at Lugdunum, an important city founded in 43 BC that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
