Historical context
Decimus Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197. Following the murder of Pertinax in 193, during the "Year of the Five Emperors", he was proclaimed emperor by legions in Britain and Hispania. Albinus initially cooperated with another contender, Septimius Severus, before they turned on each other in 196, commencing a civil war that ended when Albinus died in battle in 197.
This silver coin was struck at the Rome mint as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin originally introduced during the Second Punic War around 211 BC.
