Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, serving initially as co-emperor alongside his father, Septimius Severus, who had founded the Severan dynasty after seizing power in 193. Severus proclaimed Caracalla co-ruler in 198. Together, they formed the imperial authority under which coinage was produced at the mint of Rome.

Struck as a silver denarius, the standard Roman silver coin since the Second Punic War, this issue served the empire's everyday currency system prior to its later replacement by the antoninianus. The obverse depicts the laureate, draped bust of the young co-emperor accompanied by the legend "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse carries the legend "ADVENT AVGG" alongside a depiction of a galley carrying rowers, passengers, a vexillum at the prow, and three seated figures with two standards at the stern.
