Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217, initially serving as co-emperor alongside his father, Septimius Severus, who had seized power in 193 and established the Severan dynasty. Septimius Severus proclaimed Caracalla co-ruler in 198. The imperial mint at Rome produced coinage on behalf of the co-emperors during this shared reign, prior to Severus's death in 211.

This silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination from its introduction around 211 BC until its replacement by the antoninianus. Struck under the authority of Caracalla and Septimius Severus, the coin features an obverse portrait bust of the young co-emperor with the legend "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse depicts the Dea Caelestis seated on a galloping lion above flowing waters, paired with the legend "INDVLGENTIA AVGG IN CARTH".
