Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later called Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. Initially named co-emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus, he briefly governed with his brother Geta following Severus's death in 211 AD. After orchestrating Geta's murder that same year, Caracalla governed as sole ruler of the Roman Empire, leaving substantial administrative duties to his mother, Julia Domna.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver coin represents the denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. Caracalla's obverse legend presents him as "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT", while the reverse records his imperial titles with "P M TR P XIIII COS III P P". The reverse imagery displays Virtus, helmeted and draped, resting her left foot on a helmet while holding a spear and a parazonium.
