RIC IV Caracalla 2 (denarius). Denomination: Denarius. Authority: Caracalla; Septimius Severus. Mint: Rome. The obverse shows bust of Caracalla, bare-headed, draped, cuirassed, right, with the legend M AVR ANTONINVS CAES.

The reverse shows minerva, helmeted, draped, wearing aegis on breast, standing left, resting right hand on shield set on ground and holding spear in left hand, with the legend SECVRITAS PERPETVA.

Historical context

This silver coin was produced at the Rome mint under the authority of Emperor Septimius Severus and his elder son Caracalla. Severus founded the Severan dynasty after seizing power in 193 following the death of Pertinax, later naming Caracalla co-emperor in 198. Born Lucius Septimius Bassianus to Severus and Julia Domna, Caracalla was formally named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.

The reverse portrays the helmeted goddess Minerva standing with an aegis, spear, and shield, accompanied by the inscription "SECVRITAS PERPETVA".
