Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. A member of the Severan dynasty, he ruled alone following the murder of his brother Geta in 211 AD. His reign was characterised by domestic instability, external invasions by Germanic peoples, and major administrative measures such as the Antonine Constitution.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver currency that served the empire from around 211 BC until its gradual replacement by the antoninianus. The coin features the obverse legend "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM" alongside the imperial portrait. Its reverse shows Hercules holding a branch and a club, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P XVI COS IIII P P".
