RIC IV Caracalla 227 (denarius). Denomination: Denarius. Authority: Caracalla; Septimius Severus. Mint: Rome. The obverse shows head of Caracalla, laureate, bearded, right, with the legend ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT.

The reverse shows providentia, draped, standing left, holding wand in right hand over globe and sceptre in left hand, with the legend PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM.

Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, having been proclaimed co-ruler by his father, Septimius Severus, who founded the Severan dynasty. Following his father's death in 211, Caracalla briefly shared power with his brother Geta before having him murdered to rule alone. Severus had travelled to Britain in 208, campaigning there until his death in 211.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse features the laureate head of Caracalla with the legend ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT. The reverse carries the legend PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM and depicts the draped figure of Providentia standing left, holding a wand over a globe in her right hand and a sceptre in her left.
