Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later taking the names Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was a member of the Severan dynasty. His father, Emperor Septimius Severus, proclaimed him co-emperor in 198. Caracalla initially served as nominal co-ruler alongside his father before eventually ruling alone following Severus's death in 211. This coinage was produced at the mint of Rome under the authority of Caracalla and Septimius Severus.

Struck in silver, the denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until its gradual replacement during the third century. On this issue, the obverse bears the imperial legend "IMP CAE M AVR ANT AVG P TR P" encircling Caracalla's bust. The reverse displays Minerva accompanied by a trophy and shield, holding Victory and a spear, under the legend "MINER VICTRIX".
